How To Exercise With No Gym

In the spirit of January, and being fit and all that, I thought I'd give some exercise tips for people like me who don't have access to a gym.

First, a little bit of background about my physical fitness:
I have asthma so I've never been very athletic. As a kid I played soccer but the running was too hard on my lungs so I quit. I took gymnastics but then started competing and I didn't like the competitions, so I quit. Then I did softball for a while which I liked but I stopped once I got to high school because I was too busy. I took dance classes which I liked. but again, I didn't continue in high school. I didn't really do anything athletic in high school, actually. I was too busy with other things.
However, I found it easy to exercise regularly in university. My school had a gym which I utilized (membership was included in tuition), and for a while I worked at the YMCA so I had a free membership there. Even being a full time student and working part time, I had a lot of free time in my schedule and I always had someone to work out with which made it more fun and kept me accountable. Although I've never been into team sports, I have always liked swimming and in university went swimming weekly. I also played badminton with friends, tried various classes including spin and zumba, and for a while even got into jogging.

Once I finished school I had the money and the regular schedule needed to develop an exercise routine, but I moved away from the city so I had no access to a gym, or a workout buddy.

I think if I move back (or move somewhere else) I will get a membership somewhere with a pool so I can go swimming regularly again. Stephen and I also like playing badminton together so if we lived closer to a court we'd probably do that more. And some day I'd like to try kick boxing. But in the meantime, this is what I've found works for me in my current situation: no gym, but plenty of floor space.

1. Pilates
Pilates is basically a series of repeated movements designed to improve strength, endurance, and flexibility. You don't need any equipment but I use a pilates mat and my laptop, which I use to watch videos and follow along. I really like blogilates for her routines and the music that plays in her videos, but she is annoyingly chipper so be warned.

2. Dancing
Like I said I enjoy dancing and find it's a fun way to do cardio exercise. I like watching youtube videos for this, too. Sometimes I type in "Just Dance" and click on videos from that xbox game, and try to do the dances to songs I like. Sometimes I do zumba workout videos, which are also fun.

3. Walking
We have a treadmill so this is pretty easy for me even when it gets cold, but I also love going for walks outside and I usually get a lot of walking in during the day because of my job. Walking is much easier than jogging or running but has the same health benefits, and it's something you can do even if you don't have access to a gym.

It's important to find exercise you enjoy so it's fun and you'll want to do it!
