Sasquatch! 2012 Day 1 - Friday

I flew out by myself on Thursday, through Calgary. Stephen didn't come out until Saturday morning.
My flight from Calgary to Seattle was very nice because it was over the mountains.
On Thursday night I met my friends from home who brought our camping stuff (they drove to Washington) and spent the rest of Thursday night and Friday morning/afternoon trying to relax and realize I was on vacation. It felt weird not having Stephen there and I got sunburnt on my face, back, and the backs of my legs. Other than that nothing much happened.

The first band I saw on Friday was Yellow Ostrich, a band my friend really likes. They were on the Bigfoot Stage and they were pretty good.

Then we saw Of Monsters and Men on the main stage. I had downloaded their album and listened to it, and I wasn't that into it but it was cool to see them live. The girl singer was really cute and humble, which I always like in musicians. When they played their single, she was like, "Wow. that was such a surreal moment. You guys were singing our song..." It was funny.

Next was Santigold, which I stood up front for so I could dance. She put on a great show. She played a good mix of stuff from her old album and her new album, she had a crazy costume and so did her dancers, every song had choreography, her band members had crazy costumes and plastic wigs.

During her costume change her dancers danced to a song and a 2-person horse costume danced across the stage, and then Santi and her dancers were in different costumes for the rest of the set. It was pretty cool. I am excited to see her again in August.

Girl Talk was next, also on the main stage. He had a crazy light show to get everyone pumped up before he came out. Then he basically just had a huge dance party on stage the entire time he played. The dancers must have been exhausted because they danced non-stop for the entire set. It was kind of weird seeing him live, not like seeing an instrumentalist or something, because he had prepared everything before coming out, he wasn't mixing it live or anything (I don't think) and none of the music was really "his", he was just mashing it together, which is impressive on an album but not really live. However, it was super entertaining and a total spectacle...

complete with fireworks at the end.

Then we saw Explosions in the Sky over on the Bigfoot Stage and that was it for Friday.

Storm (Original Song)

I made this little video yesterday at home. I wrote this song a couple years ago and never really finished it so it's quite short, but I still like it and yesterday it was appropriate given the weather.
Stephen said he liked the song and wanted to do some production on it but I kind of like how simple it is with just the acoustic guitar and my croaky voice.

Let me know if you like these original songs I put on here. I have a song that I wrote just a couple weeks ago and I may want to make a video for it when I get back.

Off to Sasquatch tomorrow early in the morning. So no updates for a week. I want to do blog posts for each day like I did last year, so look forward to those when I return.

Have a great week, everyone! See you in June!

My May Long Weekend

This blog is becoming more and more personal but that's okay. I had a great long weekend with most of the people I love and I want to document it here so I remember it.
I always wish that everyone I love could live on the same street as me or could live in my house with me, and this weekend I got to see lots of people from all over so that was great!

I had the day off Friday because there was no school. I headed into the city and went for coffee with a friend and had a great catch-up. We hadn't seen each other in a few weeks so that was nice. That night I went for supper with my sweetie and we went to visit some friends who are like a second (or I guess third) family to us. One of our best friends' brother and sister-in-law moved back to Calgary recently and they were in town for the weekend, so we spent the night visitting and laughing with the family.
On Saturday, we got some errands done for our trip and had a bit of a shopping afternoon. My major buys were a dress for my convocation party and Legally Blonde for $5 on DVD. (I have it on VHS and the second one on DVD, now I own the first one, too! One of my favourite movies from when I was young and still great today.) Saturday night Stephen and I went for supper with my parents and then he went to watch a soccer game on TV at a friend's house and I met up with one of my best friends from out of town. She was in town for the weekend and we just did nothing together like old times when we lived in the same place. We wandered around Superstore, watched a crappy movie at her friends' house. It was fun.
Sunday morning she came over for brunch with Stephen, my parents, and I. Then my family went to my nephew's second birthday party, which was hectic and crazy but fun. We ate food all afternoon and had birthday cake, then left to go to Stephen's sister's 20th birthday dinner. We ate Indian food and more cake, laughed, visited, sat outside enjoying the nice weather, then last night went to our friend's house again to see our out-of-town friends one more time before they went back to Calgary.
Today we slept in (which we did every day this weekend) then planned out our tentative schedule for Sasquatch (which acts we are going to see), and drove home. My parents, brother, sister-in-law, and nephews came out in the afternoon. We played soccer on the lawn, played catch with a little football, ate burgers and veggies and skyped with my sister and brother-in-law and got a tour of their new house which they moved into this weekend. We ate watermelon and then went out and made s'mores over the coals of the bbq. We sat on the deck and enjoyed the weather. my nephews ran around on the lawn, played more soccer and made up games like little kids do. We took lots of photos and had a great time.
When it was time for them to go home my oldest nephew cried because he couldn't play Zelda with Stephen, so my parents said they would drive him home so he could play for a bit since his bedtime is later than his brother's.
My parents and I walked around the yard and they helped me plan out the garden I'm going to plant and taught me about all the plants that are in the yard (the ones they knew about), while Stephen and my nephew played Zelda. We sat out on the deck and visited and enjoyed the nice weather

Now everyone is gone and the house is all clean and we are going to eat watermelon and watch Legally Blonde! It was a great long weekend and next weekend will be even better!

Weekends like this make me so happy and grateful for all the amazing people in my life who live all over. I am so lucky to be able to spend time with them, feed them, give them big hugs, make silly faces on Skype, celebrate 2nd and 20th birthdays, tell stories, and mostly laugh with them all.

As Flo Rida says, "gotta love the life that we livin'". Today I do.

New Globe Tattoo (and Explanation of my Tattoos)

I got my new tattoo last night!
It's on my left shoulder and it's a globe.
ink globe world tattoo

It was really bloody and raw so didn't photograph too well, but I am really happy with how it turned out. It may need a bit of touching up in a few weeks when it heals but I love it!

flaming lips back shoulder tattoo left right
Here is a pic of my back where you can see both my tattoos. The green lines are just marker so that he could line them up.

Everyone I Know Is Broken or Broke or Both

Here are some photos from my life lately.

I painted this at my friend's house and put it up at Stephen's house (now my house, too). It's in the front entryway. Based on this song.

When I moved to a bigger house, Sam got a bigger house, too.
I am pretty sure he is dying,though...

Breakfast one morning. I love this cute teapot from my grandma.
It only makes about 1 1/2 of those huge mugs, but it's so adorable I have to use it!

Part of the commute.

Train on the way out of the city.

I am getting settled here. I really like the quiet of being outside the city. And I really like having a big yard to do work in. I feel close to my mom and my grandmas when I am gardening. So far I have just been raking and cleaning up leaves and garbage (this house is on a corner lot so there is a LOT of yard.)
I can see hints of things coming up - some tulips and other things, but nobody lived in this house for a while before Stephen bought it and I don't know how well the previous owners cared for the yard, so I will wait a few weeks to see what comes up, and then maybe do some planting of my own!
Any tips/recommendations from gardeners/garden-lovers?

I'll update later this week when I get my new tattoo. I hope you are all having a SPLENDID week!

P.S. The title of this post is taken from this song, because I finally got the album and sweatshirt in the mail...two months later.

We are going to Osheaga 2012!

I figured since I did this post, I'd better do one to announce that we are going to Osheaga festival in Montreal!
My really good friends (my boyfriend's sister and her boyfriend) are going, so we decided to go, too. It's the first week in August so neither of us will be working so we don't have to worry about getting time off (which was an issue for Sasquatch). The four of us went to Europe together for a month when we were 18, so we know we can travel together.

Stephen and I bought our tickets and booked our flights this week so it is official.

The acts I am most excited for: Sigur Ros (once in a lifetime chance to see them probably), MGMT, Florence + the Machine, seeing The Black Keys again, Snoop Dogg (just to say I've seen him), Franz Ferdinand, Passion Pit.

Bands that are playing both Sasquatch and Osheaga: The Shins, Metric, Feist, Santigold, fun., Of Monsters and Men, The Sheepdogs.

I am excited. It will be a great time!
