My New Favourite Place

In my life I have collected many things. When I was younger I collected pencils and stickers mostly.
But my two most lasting collections are books and postcards. I have always been a book-lover, that goes without saying.
When I was 12 my parents took me on a trip across Canada to visit a childhood friend on the other side of the country, and we came back through the States. I bought a postcard in each province and state we were in, and that's how I started my collection.
I always said I would have a room papered with postcards, full of books. And now I finally have dream library!

close-up of Canadian postcards. I've been to every province but Newfoundland, the Yukon, Nunavut, and NWT.
close-up of places in other countries I've been. I've also been to Mexico and some other states but I didn't start collecting postcards until I was 12.
places I haven't been yet...all in Europe. I am only now seeing how crooked some of these are.
They need straightening up.
more Europe postcards
and these are the stacks of ones I couldn't fit. I may put some more up but I'm not sure yet.
I'd like to leave room for all the places I haven't been yet...

Longing (Original Song)

A while ago...back in May, I think..I wrote a song about being unhappy in certain situations, yet not really wanting to change anything... a sort of...content longing.

Lyrics after the jump.

Our cheeks are nice and rosy and comfy-cozy are we

All week I'd been feeling depressed, apathetic, and lazy. I felt like blaming the weather. It was cold and beginning to be dark all the time, everything was grey and brown and dead and ugly - the trees, the sky, the ground. It had snowed a week ago but it all melted. I felt like the Joel Plaskett lyric, "If it's gonna snow I wish it would start instead of taking three months to break this heart."
Honestly, I just don't see the point of winter without snow. I don't mind the cold or the dark if it there is fresh, pure, white, sparkly, magical snow all over!
But snowed again!
And we are home for the weekend. (in this case home means the place we started).
This morning I took some photos from my parents' house with my new phone.

By the way, this is the new phone I got. I really like it so far, I've had it for about a week. The red on the front is subtly sparkly so Stephen named the phone Christmas Sparkle which makes me like it even more.

It's so beautiful!

and it's not even very cold out! I am very happy.

The snow and maybe coming back to the city and having nothing to do last night (my plans fell through because an out-of-town friend couldn't make it in due to weather) also helped me get back on track with NaNoWriMo. as you can see, I was behind for most of the week but last night I sat down and wrote about 2,000 words, so that helped me catch up a bit. If I can find some more time to write today I will be almost back on track.

Current word count: 13,062
Where I should be by the end of today (not gonna happen): 16, 666

Have a great weekend!

You don't need tricks, you don't need treats, you don't need no Halloween.

As promised, here are some photos of our jack o'lantern.
Our friend's mom gave us a pumpkin that she grew. Stephen turned it into a masterpiece.
A ghost playing trumpet...fitting since he is a music teacher and trumpet is his first instrument.

here's the music the ghost is playing

and here it is lit up.

I made a spur-of-the-moment costume for the trick-or-treaters (my students) to enjoy.

And...yes. I am going to be doing NaNoWriMo this year. I am probably crazy, attempting this as a first-year teacher, but whatever. It's happening. I will still try to blog at least once a week, and I will put my word count at the bottom of my posts throughout the month.
you can also keep up with my progress here, or become my writing buddy if you are participating, too.
Wish me luck!
