Autumn in the City

Lately we've had weather in the 30s (Celsius) but everything is still changing colour. It's been odd since fall usually only lasts a few days here and then it gets and stays cold. I've been enjoying the transition time this year.

This weekend I am going out of town and I hope it stays nice out and that the leaves don't fall until then. If the season lasts long enough I'll have a similar blog post next week called "Autumn in the Country". I hope you're all having a great week!

Also, watch this to have your week made:

Don't Ask Don't Tell Repealed!

If you are reading my blog as a Canadian and thinking 'how does it affect you?' it doesn't directly, but I do live in the world so it kind of does. DADT was a law, yeah, but it is also a philosophy that a lot of people, still, in 2011 have in their lives.
If the President of the United States sends out the message that it's not okay to discriminate against people based on sexual orientation, maybe the rest of the world will follow suit, sooner rather than later.

This repeal changed lives for the better.
Somebody said to me once that if Obama got rid of the Imperial system, it would be awesome and that would be what he would be known for, but I think this is better.

Check out this link for more videos and stories.

Happy Tuesday! Tell someone you love them!

Where I'm From

Last week I had my students write "Where I'm From" poems. Theirs were awesome and inspired me to try to write one.

The poems had to include: the phrase "I am from" at least 3 times, a place, 3 items, 2 names, a saying, a food, a place where memories are kept, a simile, a metaphor, a use of personification, and 3 images.

Some chose to write about a specific place and some wrote about a few places.
I decided to write about when I  was in high school. As a result, it is super cheesy and rhymes! And also I don't really use any literary devices, even though I made my students. Here it is.

I am from a red Ford Tempo as old as me.
She didn't always run, but she was my Baby.

I am from the trampoline in my friend's backyard
and parties where drunk boys got hurt by darts.

I am from the little book store where I swept the floor,
in the mall where I knew someone who worked in every store.

I am from crying in the bathroom at a school dance
and standing outside the stall while a friend cried (always over lost romance.)

I am from Mr. Jazz Band saying, “Define friends...right?”
Peanut M&Ms, Subway, and Sprite.

I am from striped knee socks and red hair,
Me and Lennon: The Masked Culprits, always a pair.

I am from writing haikus in Science class
from slipping on the ice and falling on my ass.

Yearbooks don't show pictures of the 'hallowed halls,'
the fluorescent lights or the grey prison walls.

Yearbooks show peoples' faces, they show the truth:
The importance of a place comes from the people
who change you.

Soundtrack to My Life

Busy week, no motivation. It's getting colder, I'm getting older, what can I say. Here's a music survey I found online. It's pretty cool. Some of the questions remind me of My Music Listography, a book Stephen and I were filling out on our Sasquatch road trip, but we only made a few lists each, haha. It fizzled out before we even got to Washington. Anyways, enjoy.

What song:

1. Reminds you of a past relationship?

Hands Down - Dashboard Confessional

"My hopes are so high that your kiss might kill me
So won't you kill me so I die happy?"

2. Makes you think of your boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse?

First Day of My Life - Bright Eyes

"This is the first day of my life. I'm glad I didn't die before I met you
but now I don't care, I could go anywhere with you and I'd probably be happy."

3. Best describes your feelings about your current life situation?

This Year - Meghan Tonjes

"And I'm gonna be fine, fine fine. I'm gonna be brilliant."

4. Best describes your normal mood?

No Rain - Blind Melon

"All I can say is that my life is pretty plain. I like watching the puddles gather rain."

5. Makes you want to get up and dance?

Teenage Dream - Glee

Not even ashamed.

6. Reminds you of your childhood?

Anything Disney.

7. Reminds you of a lost loved one?

What A Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong

8. Reminds you of your mother and father?

Good Mother - Jann Arden and You Can Call Me Al - Paul Simon

9. Cheers you up when you're angry?

Usually something really angry that I can swear to, like Nicki Minaj or Eminem.

10. Would you play at your wedding?

Pitter Patter Goes My Heart - Broken Social Scene (but with live musicians)

11. Reminds you of your best friend?

That depends who I'm defining as my best friend.
J- Anything by Rilo Kiley, Fallout Boy, Mexican Wine - Fountains of Wayne, and some other random stuff.
K- Anything by Regina Spektor, Lady Gaga, anything in French, Girlfriend in a Coma - Joshua Radin
L- Anything from Glee, Anything by Taylor Swift, Breakfast at Tiffany's - Deep Blue Sea
C- Pump Up the Jam - Technotronic, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Fly - Nicki Minaj, Perfect - Pink

12. Makes you think of your job?

Another Brick In the Wall Pt 2. - Pink Floyd

"We don't need no education, we don't need no thought control.
No dark sarcasm in the classroom. Teachers, leave them kids alone."

13. Puts you right to sleep?

If You Can't Sleep - She & Him
Butterfly - Rajaton
Such Great Heights - Iron & Wine

14. Wakes you up in the morning?

Get Up, Stand Up - Bob Marley

15. Would you want played at your funeral?

In My Life - The Beatles

"There are places I'll remember all my life
Though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain

All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new

Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more"

Monte Carlo film stills

So last night I decided to watch Monte Carlo instead of Country Strong. And the thing is: I liked it.
I mean, of course it was every bit as cheesy and cliche as I expected, but it was a really pretty film to watch. Everything in it was eye candy. All of the people in the movie were super attractive, the clothes were really nice, and it was all in Paris and Monte Carlo so it was really nice to look at.

I watched a really low-quality version, so all of the stills look old-timey, which adds something to them, I think.

The premise of the movie is: Three girls (Leighton Meester, Katie Cassidy, and Selena Gomez) go to Paris but their tour abandons them at the Eiffel Tower. They discover one of the girls (Gomez) looks like a famous socialite who is in town, heading to Monte Carlo. They figure it out when they see the girl in a hotel, talking on the phone about how she is skipping town. So Gomez poses as the girl and they go to Monte Carlo and have a grand old time pretending to be rich.

They all spend time gallavanting around a foreign country with various hot men, they all do some soul-searching and in the end the truth comes out but it's all okay and everybody gets exactly what they wanted, and they all end up with really hot, nice guys. Romantic comedy for sure.

At one point, one of the characters is watching a Grace Kelly film (because they are in Monaco, get it?) but I think Leighton Meester looks like Kelly in this photo. For some reason it reminds me of this one:

Leighton Meester and this other girl up here are both from Gossip Girl, and that dude is in Glee, and Selena Gomez is a Disney princess and Justin Bieber's girlfriend, so it is loaded with preteen idols. It reminded me of movies I watched when I was a preteen, like Sabrina Goes to Rome and the Lizzie Maguire movie.

It made me want to travel, and go shopping, which I think was probably the goal. I wouldn't recommend it unless it comes on while you're on an airplane or something like that, but it is pretty, so enjoy the stills.

Have a good weekend.

5 things that have made my week awesome.

This week is a total turn-around from last week.
The long weekend was awesome, and this week I found that I am settled into a routine, my friends have all gone back to school, I am LOVING my internship, everything about it - the people I am working with, what I am doing, everything. It's going to be great. I am having a really good week. This week's blog is just going to be a collection of stuff  that I want to share with you. Things that are making my week awesome. Check it out.

1. This video. Watch it, it will make your day.

2. This song/album.

I love this song, it is so perfect for me right now, and probably most people at this time. It's the beginning of September. The start of a new school year, a new season, a fresh start.
The whole album is fantastic. Buy it here.

3. This book/project.

Dear Mr. Potter

"Dear Mr. Potter is a blog-based charity project that focuses on J.K. Rowling’s life-changing Harry Potter series, and how it has impacted, inspired, and affected its fans...The best of these submissions are featured in a 100% non-profit professional book, with the proceeds going entirely towards furthering youth literacy through the Harry Potter Alliance."

I am reading the book right now and it's really cool.
Read it or buy it here

4. Good food.

I've been trying to eat really healthy and deliciously lately. Some things I've had to eat this week:
- whole wheat bagel with tuna and spinach.
- honey nut cheerios with blueberries and milk.
- chickpeas, tomatoes, cucumbers, and rice.
- banana chocolate chip muffins.
And I've been at a conference for the past two days with a buffet lunch and it has been really good.

Tonight I am probably going to make a black bean avocado salad.
(images from Google)

5. down time.

I haven't been too busy this week, but I feel I've gotten a lot done. I worked out with a friend, had a Skype date with my sister, did laundry, played guitar, finished season 6 of How I Met Your Mother, had a work thing last night, and tonight I plan on cleaning my fish tank and watching Country Strong.
It's been a nice relaxing week with lots of me-time, so that has been awesome.

How are all of your weeks going?

Books Read So Far in 2011: 31. According to my phone, we are on week 36 of the year so I am only 5 books behind.
Currently Reading: Dear Mr. Potter. And I will probably re-read Hamlet this week or this weekend, and read Night for school. So that'll bring my total up a bit.
