Thank you!

This month my blog got over 100 more page views than last month, making a new record for pageviews per month! Woo hoo!

Usually I get around 200 pageviews per month on this blog and in January I had over 300. Awesome! Sure, some of those views are probably from spam bots, but a lot of them are real people like you! So I just wanted to say thanks for reading this blog. I think I've really found my stride and have a good idea of what I want The Other Dani to be in 2011. Thanks for coming along with me on the journey.

I see you're colourful, I see you in the trees, I see you're spiritful. You're in the breeze.

Yesterday was unseasonably warm here. To give some perspective, on Friday it was -45 degrees Celsius with a wind chill (wind chill means it's very windy and so it feels a lot colder than the temperature says it is.) And yesterday (Sunday) it was +2 degrees Celsius, and windy, so it felt about -5. Which is like early summer here sometimes (slight exaggeration.)
So I took a break from homework and went for a walk with my camera and apparently I'm obsessed with the sky, sun, and snow because out of all the pictures I took these were the ones I liked and chose to post.

Winter Sun
Look at that blue sky!
The sky is why I like living here.

"Oh the sky could be blue, I don't mind.
Without you it's a waste of time.
The sky could be blue, could be gray.
Without you I just slide away."
- Strawberry Swing, Coldplay

Books Read So Far: Still 3.
Been busy with school/procrastinating. Last night I decided to re-watch Season 1 and half of Season 2 of The Office (the American one) instead of doing any reading for school or fun. So that was productive...
Currently Reading: Water for Elephants. I'm going to finish it by Wednesday. That's my goal.

Have a great week everybody. We made it through January! (just about) Hurray!

Ferris Bueller Is My Hero

A couple of weeks ago somebody quoted a line from Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It was probably the stupid, overly-quoted Ben Stein "Bueller...Bueller..." thing. Not important. My friend said he'd never seen the movie. This had to be rectified immediately, of course, so I lent him the DVD and I told him: "This movie will make you wish you were in high school again so you could have another chance to have a day like that."  And since then I've been thinking about John Hughes' movies. And we all know I like to make lists about things.
So.... looking at the films Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986, written and directed by John Hughes), The Breakfast Club (1985, written and directed by John Hughes), Pretty In Pink (1986, written by John Hughes, directed by Howard Deutch), and Sixteen Candles (1984, written and directed by John Hughes), I'm going to make some lists. Yay!
Here you go:

Guys You Wanted To Be
1. Ferris Bueller. Every guy and girl wants to be Ferris Bueller. He's the coolest.
2. Ducky from Pretty In Pink. Awesome style, great dance moves. Sure he has a burning unrequited love for his best friend, but who didn't in high school? (joke.)
3. John Bender from The Breakfast Club. Total badass.

Guys You Wanted To Date
1. John Bender, again. Obviously. I mean, look at that fist pump of triumph. I want someone to do that after kissing me!
2. I always had a little thing for Cameron. He's the quiet, mysterious type.
3. Jake Ryan. Dreamboat.

Girls You Wanted To Be
1. Andie Walsh from Pretty In Pink. Awesome clothes, cool job. A great best friend.
2. Samantha Baker from Sixteen Candles. Her whole family forgets her birthday, but then she gets with the hot guy at the end.
3. Claire Standish from The Breakfast Club. She's rich, spoiled, and she gets with Judd Nelson. 'Nuf said.

Girls You Wanted To Date
1. Sloane Peterson from Ferris Bueller. Coolest and hottest girlfriend ever.
2. Andie Walsh. Dream girl of best friends, assholes, and popular rich guys alike.
3. Jeannie Bueller. "...most guys call me Shauna." Crack addict Charlie Sheen didn't know what hit him.

Best Couples
1. Claire & Bender from The Breakfast Club.
2. Ferris & Sloane from Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
3. Sam & Jake from Sixteen Candles.

Honourable Mention: Andie & Ducky. Not a real couple but so cute.

And there you have it!

*By the way, the best part of this post was all the photos the links led to, so if you didn't click them you really missed out.

Wrapped Up In Books

I made a new page on my blog. You can see it in the sidebar beside this post if you're viewing this post on the home page. If you're viewing this post in an RSS feed, the page looks like THIS.

This will help me keep track of all the books I read in 2010 and it can help you, too, if you're interested in following that.

I finished Monster, that book I was reading for school, and last night I read John Green's zombie apocalypse novella, Zombicorns.

John Green is one of my favourite authors and he wrote a zombie apocalypse novella last year for NaNoWriMo 2009. He didn't finish it, but then he decided to auction it off to raise money for charity. So as part of the Project for Awesome (a day where people make youtube videos to support and promote charities) he raffled off a signed, annotated copy of the completed novella, and everyone who donated $25 to Partners in Health was eligible to win that and even if they didn't they got a digital copy in both a PDF and word doc. format. So I got my copy in my e-mail yesterday and read it last night. It wasn't the best thing ever, obviously, because it has undergone no editing or revision. But it was still pretty great.

It was also the first book I've read in 2011 that I felt like writing a review for, but then I read this review here so I didn't want to write one anymore because that one's better than what I would have written so you should probably just read that instead.

I do plan on doing some book reviews this year when I read something I really want to write about. And I have a couple posts planned for this week/next week, but I'm having a busy week so if I don't post again this week check back Friday or Saturday.

Have a great week, everybody! We've almost made it through January! (In my opinion the coldest, longest, and therefore worst month of the year.) Yay!

"What kind of life you dream of? You're allergic to love!"

Book Update: I'm not very far into Water for Elephants. But I'm enjoying it so far. Premise: It's the Depression. A Polish American man (Robert Pattinson, haha) runs away from Cornell when his parents die and he joins the circus because he was going to vet school. He falls in love with the circus trainer's wife (Reese Witherspoon.) so far he has just hopped the train and some bum is going to try to get him a job...obviously I know how that's going to turn out.

And now I'm reading Monster by Walter Dean Myers for school, and I am not very far into it either. It's a YA novel from...97 I think. And it won the Printz award so it's presumably quite good. Premise: a 16 year old black man is on trial for murder. He writes a movie in his head and in a notebook and that is the book that the reader seems cool. I have to finish it by Tuesday, and I am giving myself a deadline of next Saturday to have finished the Gruen. Then I will be on track. Three weeks into 2011, I will have read 3 books. Hopefully that goes according to plan.

Things haven't really picked up at school yet so I've been trying to make good use of my free time, reading, watching movies, playing guitar, working out, taking pictures, listening to music, etc. key word being trying. Mostly I've been just messing around on the internet and watching episodes from Season 1 of Modern Family on my computer. It's a good life.
Here are some random rainbow-themed photos to brighten up this boring update post!

My school binder

it's so fun!
My sister got me this book for Christmas...well, she got me a gift card so I could buy it! I'm excited to read it soon.

And because I love my blog readers, here is a special treat. One of my favourite moments in cinema. Enjoy!

DJ Earworm makes Pop Music Into Art

Around this time last year I came across DJ Earworm online. I downloaded and fell in love with his mashup of top pop songs from 2009. This weekend I found the mashup on my iTunes and remembered it, and it made me want to check if there was a new one for 2010. And there was!
I don't really listen to a lot of pop music and I tend to think of it as superficial, but DJ Earworm makes it into something artistic.
What I really love about these mashups is how he (I'm assuming DJ Earworm is a dude but I don't know so I'm just gonna say he) he finds meaning not just in the individual songs but how he is able to find an overarching theme for the year, and (because it's pop music) it is a very positive message.

DJ Earworm says of his 2009 Mashup: "This year in the charts, so many of the pop songs this year seem to tell the same story: Yeah, we’ve been through a lot, but right now we’re gonna celebrate with music and dance, and it’s gonna be ok. With that spirit in mind, I invite you to…BLAME IT ON THE POP"

Of 2010, he says: "In 2010, pop has gone into serious all-out party mode. In 2009 the music was encouraging us to pick ourselves back up after being knocked down again, and to rock out to some great dance music while you’re at it. This year’s music tells us to keep going now that we’re up and having fun...It's a great thing about music that you can leave your worries and lose yourself in the moment...So with that in mind I urge you all please...DON'T STOP THE POP."

My boyfriend got me this necklace for Christmas and it inspired me to take some photos of some of my favourite jewellry and post them on here. In 2011 I want this blog to be more books, more music, more photography, and maybe a little bit more fashion since I read and am inspired by a lot of fashion blogs so this post is a little fashion-y
Here is the necklace:

but it gets better...

isn't that the cutest thing?
He got it on Etsy.

This is a piece of jewellry I wear all the time. It's a claddagh ring...also a gift from my boyfriend. We've been together a long time so most of my sentimental jewellry that I wear a lot came from him.

If you don't know what a claddagh ring is there is some information here. It's an Irish tradition, usually it's a wedding ring or promise ring. I've heard that it can mean different things depending on how you wear it. And although my boyfriend and I are both Irish the real reason I have that ring is because of this necklace:

He got me this necklace when we'd been going out for a year. His mom brought it back from Ireland. I liked the symbol but I liked the words more. I was in a conference yesterday and a lady asked if people had personal mottos and I didn't think I did but I guess if I had one it would be "love, loyalty, friendship."
So I already had the necklace and then we saw the ring a few years later so he bought it for me.

This is a necklace that my friend made me for my birthday last year. She designs and sells handmade jewellry and it's really cool. Check it out here.

This is a necklace I got from Figs and Ginger, an eco-friendly jewellry store. It's the only piece I have from them even though I love their stuff. In April they had a contest/giveaway sort of thing where if you sent in a photo of you planting a tree for Earth Day, you got a free bunny necklace. I planted a tree, sent in a photo and got the necklace. And I love it, it's so cute!

Some of my favourite earrings of the many, many pairs I have (I have four ear piercings):

My grandma gave me these for my birthday last year.

Bought these at some art fair or something in the city.

Got these at a garage sale for 10 cents. They're kind of big but they're really cool.

And that's that. I hope everybody had a good week, mine was alright. I'm happy it's Friday and the only thing I have to do is work a short shift. No classes Friday woot!

Books read so far: still 0. I have about 90 pages left of my book though so I'll finish it today which will put me ahead, because I was supposed to finish it on Saturday since I started is Saturday last week.
Currently Reading: My Name Is Memory by Ann Brashares. Not sure what I'll read next off my shelf. Probably Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen. I've had that one on my shelf for ages. I bought it used years ago when a high school English teacher recommended it to me, but I haven't read it and this is lame motivation but now they're making a movie out of it so I want to read it.

If you read my blog, comment and tell me what you like about it so I can do more of that. Thanks. And have a good weekend!

Pink and Purple and Yellow and Blue. and a mouth that's crying out for lipstick, too.

I've been happily wasting one of my last days of break before going back to school and work. I'm still in my jammies. Here are some photos I took last night and today.

I took this photo and I liked the shadows but the background was distracting so I made it into this. It's way uglier than my header I have now for this blog so I'm not going to use it but I kind of like it.
Books read so far: 0.
I finished Of Bees and Mist on Jan. 1 but I only read about 80 pages so I'm not going to count it.

Currently reading: My Name Is Memory by Ann Brashares. (the lady who wrote the travelling pants books.)  So far it's pretty good. I'm only about 60 pages in.

Premise: Daniel remembers all his past lives even when he dies and is reborn and throughout all his lives he has loved the same girl. In the present he finds Lucy (the girl) and they meet and also he keeps remembering his past lives. It's a cool concept so we'll see how it turns out.

Have a great week everyone! Don't let going back to school/work get you down.
